Cooling Tower Blowdown Reuse DOW UF Membranes SFP-2860XP / SFD-2860XP PVDF Module 51 m2 High Flux
Industrial facilities with large cooling towers continuously discharge blowdown to control dissolved solids, and in water-stressed regions every cubic meter of that discharge is a lost resource. Treating blowdown with UF followed by RO allows the water to be recycled back to the cooling system, cutting makeup water demand by up to 80 percent. The DOW UF membrane SFP-2860XP / SFD-2860XP module is built for exactly this duty: high flux, compact footprint and the fouling resistance needed for cooling water containing corrosion products, scale particles and microbiological debris.
The XP high-flux version of the IntegraFlux 2860 module delivers 2.0 to 8.5 m3/hr from a 51 m2 PVDF fiber bundle while operating in the simple outside-in dead end mode. Because cooling tower blowdown chemistry varies with cycles of concentration and treatment chemicals, the module's wide pH tolerance and robust fiber construction keep the pretreatment rack reliable through every seasonal condition.

Cooling tower blowdown reuse systems couple the SFP-2860XP modules with RO to recycle blowdown as cooling makeup. The UF step protects the RO from the particles, iron corrosion products and biofilms that accumulate in recirculating cooling water, enabling RO recovery rates that make the recycle loop economically attractive. Such systems are installed in steel mills, petrochemical plants, data centers and combined heat and power facilities.
The module is also used for side-stream filtration of cooling water, pre-treatment of river or pond makeup water and wastewater recycling in utility plants. Our engineers size the UF rack, select the backwash regime and calculate the water balance so that the cooling system's cycles of concentration stay within design limits.
