Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) is a colorless, easily deliquescent crystal compound that readily dissolves in water. The hydrated form can be extracted from brine or seawater, typically containing 6 molecules of crystal water. When heated to 95°C, it loses crystal water and begins decomposing above 135°C, releasing hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas.
