Silver Oxide (Ag₂O): Battery Electrodes, Organic Halogen Conversion Reagents, and Water Purification Catalysts.

Chemical formula: Ag₂O. Molecular weight: 231.74. Brown-black cubic crystals or powder. Decomposes gradually into silver and oxygen when exposed to light. Specific gravity: 7.143 (16.6°C). Appears nearly black when dried at 60-80°C. Decomposes at 300°C with accelerated decomposition at 250-300°C.

Slightly soluble in water (alkaline solution), soluble in ammonia water, potassium cyanide solution, nitric acid and sodium thiosulfate solution, poorly soluble in ethanol. Moist product absorbs carbon dioxide from air. Can be reduced to metallic silver by formaldehyde solution in presence of alkali. Friction with flammable organic materials may cause combustion.

Its ammonia solution may precipitate explosive black crystals (possibly silver nitride Ag₃N or silver imide Ag₂NH) after prolonged storage. Used in organic synthesis for hydroxyl substitution of halogens or as oxidant. Also used as coloring agent in glass industry. Prepared by reaction of silver nitrate solution with sodium hydroxide solution.

About Silver Oxide
Silver oxide serves as electrode material in silver oxide batteries. As weak oxidant and base in organic synthesis, it reacts with 1,3-disubstituted imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts to generate N-heterocyclic carbenes, replacing unstable ligands like cyclooctadiene or acetonitrile as carbene transfer reagents for transition metal carbene complexes.

Additionally, silver oxide can:

• Convert organic bromides/chlorides to alcohols at low temperature with moisture present
• Transform benzyl halides to benzyl ethers
• Serve as methylating agent with methyl iodide for sugar methylation analysis and Hofmann elimination
• Oxidize aldehydes to carboxylic acids
• Act as surface catalyst for alkene epoxidation

Production Method
Silver nitrate method: Silver nitrate solution reacts with sodium hydroxide solution. The produced silver oxide is washed, separated and dried to obtain final product.
