Description

Gallium (Ga): Semiconductor Dopant, NdFeB Magnet Additive, and Low-Melting-Point Alloy Component

Gallium is a chemical element with symbol "Ga" and atomic number 31, belonging to Group 13 of the periodic table. As a post-transition metal, it shares similar characteristics with aluminum, indium and thallium. In nature, it typically exists in trace amounts within zinc ores and bauxite. At standard temperature and pressure, gallium is a soft, silvery metal that becomes brittle at lower temperatures. It turns to liquid above 29.76°C (85.57°F), meaning it melts in human hands (normal body temperature being 37°C (99°F)).

Applications

  1. Used in gallium alloys for thermometers
  2. Serves as additive in neodymium-iron-boron magnetic materials
  3. Functions as dopant in semiconductor substrates

About Gallium

Gallium is obtained as byproduct of aluminum and zinc smelting processes, though little is extracted from sphalerite. Most gallium is derived from crude aluminum hydroxide solutions in the Bayer process. Through mercury cell electrolysis and sodium hydroxide amalgam hydrolysis, sodium gallate is obtained, which is then electrolyzed to produce gallium. Semiconductor-grade gallium requires further purification via zone melting or single crystal extraction from melts (Czochralski method). 99.9999% pure gallium is routinely obtained and widely used commercially.

Industrial production uses industrial-grade gallium as raw material, with further purification through:

  • Electrolysis
  • Reduced-pressure distillation
  • Fractional crystallization
  • Zone melting

Electrolytic Method:
Uses 99.99% industrial-grade gallium as feedstock. Through electrolytic refining and other Chemicalbook processes, produces ≥99.999% pure gallium.

Ultra-Purification:
Using ≥99.999% high-purity gallium as feedstock, through single crystal growth or other purification methods, produces ≥99.99999% pure gallium.
