Description

Inconel 617 Tubes: Solid-Solution Alloy and Gas-Turbine and Furnace Applications

Product Overview

Inconel 617 Tubes (UNS N06617) are solid-solution strengthened nickel-chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloys engineered for severe high-temperature and corrosive environments. The alloy’s composition—approximately 52 % Ni, 22 % Cr, 12.5 % Co, 9.5 % Mo, 1 % Al, and 0.3 % Ti—yields outstanding tensile strength up to 760 MPa and elongation over 30 % after solution annealing. These tubes retain mechanical integrity from cryogenic service to 982 °C (1800 °F), exhibiting exceptional resistance to oxidation, carburization, and thermal cycling in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Inconel 617’s high chromium and aluminum contents form a dense alumina/chromia scale at temperature, while cobalt and molybdenum impart corrosion resistance in wet and chloride-bearing media. Available as seamless per ASTM B167 or welded per ASTM B163, tube OD ranges from 3 mm to 600 mm with wall thicknesses of 0.5 mm–30 mm, and lengths to 12 m, these tubes serve gas turbines (ducting, transition liners), chemical reactors (coil tubing, heat exchangers), and furnace hardware (radiant tubes, thermocouple protection). Their excellent weldability (TIG/GTAW, EB) and formability accommodate complex assemblies with minimal post-weld heat treatment.

Applications

  • Gas Turbine Engines: Ducting, transition liners, combustor fuel lines

  • Chemical Processing: Reactor coils, heat-exchanger tubing, bubbling caps

  • Heat Treatment Furnaces: Radiant tubes, thermocouple protection, retort baskets

  • Marine & Offshore: Seawater condenser tubes, riser sheathing

  • Nuclear: Control-rod support springs, spacer grids

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Why choose Inconel 617 Tubes for high-temperature service?
A1: Their solid-solution strengthening maintains tensile strength and ductility up to 982 °C without aging, and their high Cr/Al content provides superior oxidation and carburization resistance.

Q2: Are Inconel 617 Tubes weldable without loss of properties?
A2: Yes. TIG/GTAW and electron-beam welding produce sound welds; a solution-anneal post-weld restores full mechanical and corrosion resistance.

Q3: What tube sizes and finishes are available?
A3: OD from 3 mm to 600 mm, wall thickness 0.5 mm–30 mm; available pickled, annealed, or stress-relieved per ASTM B167 and custom lengths up to 12 m.
