Flange
A flange is a protruded ridge, lip or rim, either external or internal, that serves to increase strength (as the flange of an iron beam such as an I-beam or a T-beam); for easy attachment/transfer of contact force with another object (as the flange on the end of a pipe, steam cylinder, etc., or on the lens mount of a camera); or for stabilizing and guiding the movements of a machine or its parts (as the inside flange of a rail car or tram wheel, which keep the wheels from running off the rails). The term "flange" is also used for a kind of tool used to form flanges.
Sealing principle of flat welding flange: the two sealing surfaces of the bolt squeeze the flange gasket and form a seal, but this also leads to the destruction of the seal. In order to keep the seal, it is necessary to maintain a huge bolt force. Therefore, the bolt should be made larger. The larger bolt needs to match the larger nut, which means that the bolt with larger diameter is needed to create conditions for tightening the nut. However, the larger the diameter of the bolt, the applicable flange will become bent. The only way is to increase the wall thickness of the flange part. The entire unit will require enormous size and weight, which becomes a special problem in the offshore environment, because in this case, weight is always the main problem that people must pay attention to. Moreover, fundamentally speaking, the flat welding flange is an ineffective seal. It needs to use 50% of the bolt load for extruding the gasket, while the load for maintaining the pressure is only 50%
