Metal Structured Packing Introduction


Metal structured packing can be made of various metal materials, such as low carbon steel, stainless steel, Monel, Ti and others. The stainless steel structured packing is the most widely used because of the excellent corrosion and rust resistance and durable properties. Metal structured packing has different packing types, which can be divided into wire gauze structured packing and perforated plate structured packing.

Metal Structured Packing Features

  • Its high mass transfer surface area is suitable for close boiling components distillation due to shorter columns.
  • Its structured arrangement ensures no channeling of liquid and requires minimum liquid redistribution.
  • Due to its very low pressure drop, it is recommended for vacuum distillation systems.
  • It has higher vapour load capacity as compared to random packing and trays.
  • It provides low liquid hold-up.

Metal Structured Packing Application

  • Absorption Towers: In air pollution control, metal structured packing is used to remove gases like carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and ammonia from industrial exhaust streams.

  • Gas Scrubbing: Applied in systems where pollutants need to be absorbed by a liquid, such as in chemical scrubbers for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other harmful gases.

  • Heat Exchange Systems: Metal structured packing is used to enhance heat transfer efficiency in heat exchangers, cooling towers, and other thermal management systems.

  • Pharmaceutical and Food Processing: In pharmaceutical manufacturing and food production, metal structured packing is used for solvent recovery, purification, and separation processes.
