Why is fluid management critical when operating burs at high speeds?

• A: When running burs above 6,000 RPM, continuous fluid flow must be maintained before activating the handpiece. Running a bur dry or without adequate fluid can generate excessive friction heat, potentially melting the bur hubs or causing thermal necrosis to tissue.

What causes a handpiece to overheat during a procedure?

• A: Overheating is typically caused by excessive physical loading/force, lack of irrigation fluid, mechanical wear, or a failing internal motor. If the handpiece feels unusually hot, discontinue use immediately to prevent patient burn risks.
