Why Top Balance LiFePO4 Cells Before Building Battery Packs
Whether using Grade A, B, or C cells, or used LiFePO4 cells, initial balancing is essential to bring them to the same state of charge. Voltage alone is unreliable for determining state of charge in this chemistry due to the flat charge and discharge curve.
Proper initial balance ensures accurate capacity test results. If cells are unbalanced, it can trigger BMS high or low voltage cutoffs, leading to inaccurate capacity measurements.
For balancing issues, perform initial balancing before relying on active balancers. Manual top balancing is recommended for large battery banks, varying internal cell resistance, or when dealing with large loads to ensure optimal performance and capacity balance.
