What it is
The Proline Promass F 500 is a high-precision Coriolis mass flowmeter / mass flow + density + temperature measuring device. It is part of Endress+Hauser’s Promass F family. It is designed for demanding industrial environments, where high accuracy, robustness, and flexibility are required.
How it works (principle)
- It uses the Coriolis effect: fluid flows through vibrating measuring tubes. When mass flows through, the tubes experience inertial forces which cause a phase shift between inlet and outlet vibration paths. This phase difference is proportional to the mass flow rate.
- Also measures density (because the frequency or resonance depends on fluid density), and temperature. From those, additional derived quantities can be calculated (volume flow, corrected volumes, concentration, etc.)
- The measurement is largely independent of fluid properties like viscosity, density changes, flow profile etc., so it is stable over a wide range of operating conditions.
Key specifications & capabilities
Here are the main numbers & features that define what the Promass F 500 can do:

Various: stainless steels (316L), 904L, Alloy C22 etc. Options for more corrosion-resistant materials depending on fluid.
|
Notable features
- Remote transmitter design: The sensor portion (with vibrating tubes) can be physically separated from the transmitter/electronics. This helps in very hot/harsh zones, allows flexibility in mounting, reduces exposure of electronics.
- Heartbeat Technology: For verification/self-diagnostics. Helps in process safety, in verifying the meter in place without needing removal or shutdown in many cases.
- Multivariable measurement: Mass flow, density, temperature, plus derived values (volume flow, concentration etc.). Reduces number of instruments/points needed.
- Environmental / robustness: Resistant to fluctuating and harsh operating conditions. Engineering to cope with temperature extremes, pressure, corrosion etc.
Applications
Given its capabilities, the Promass F 500 is suitable for:
- Chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas plants (liquids and gases, even aggressive or corrosive fluids)
- Cryogenic services (if using low-temperature options)
- Food, beverage, pharmaceutical industries (if using hygienic connections/materials)
- Custody transfer where mass flow accuracy is critical
- Any process where one wants combined flow + density measurement, or where conditions vary (temperature, pressure, viscosity)
- Situations where minimizing maintenance and calibration downtime is important (because of the diagnostics & verification features)
- Harsh or remote installations where separating the electronics from the sensor is beneficial
