Overview

Francis turbines filled the huge gap between Pelton and Kaplan and were widely used. They operate in the water head range of 10 to 600 meters and are mainly used for power generation. Their power output can be calculated based on head and flow velocity, and typically ranges from 10 MW to over 700 MW. An obvious advantage of Francis turbines over other water turbines is that they can also be used as water pumps. This makes them an ideal choice for pumped hydro storage systems.
Francis turbines are the most widely used type of turbine, accounting for about 60% of the world's hydroelectric power generation.
