Piece Movement Rules
King (Wang) Can move horizontally, vertically or diagonally, but only one step at a time
Queen (After) Can move horizontally, straight, or diagonally with unlimited steps, but cannot jump over other pieces. The most powerful piece in chess
Rook (Car) Can move horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally. Generally cannot jump over other pieces
Bishop (Elephant) Moves only diagonally with unlimited squares, cannot jump over pieces. Two bishops per side, one in white and one in black
Knight (Horse) Moves sideways then straight or straight then sideways. Can jump over pieces (no "bad horse leg" restriction like in Chinese chess)
Pawn (Soldier) Moves straight forward only, one square at a time (first move can be up to two squares). Captures diagonally forward
