Our Engineered Aramid Honeycomb Core with High Shear Strength and Low Smoke Toxicity resolves this dual imperative. It delivers the torsional rigidity and load-bearing capacity required for primary and secondary aerospace structures, while simultaneously ensuring that in a thermal event, smoke emission and toxic gas release remain well below international survival thresholds.

In sandwich structure design, shear strength governs load transfer between skins—it is what keeps wings from twisting, floors from buckling, and bulkheads from failing under dynamic loads. But in enclosed environments (aircraft cabins, train carriages, naval vessels), what happens during a fire is equally critical. Dense, toxic smoke incapacitates faster than flames.

This is not a compromise. This is engineered coexistence of structural performance and human safety.

1. Feature #1 – High Shear Strength (Structural Integrity Under Load)

Shear strength—particularly in the longitudinal (L) and transverse (W) directions—is the single most important mechanical property for honeycomb cores in sandwich panels. It resists skin slippage, prevents core crimping, and maintains panel flatness under bending and torsional loads.

Engineered Node Bonding for Optimized Shear Transfer

Unlike generic honeycomb, our engineered core features precisely controlled node-bonding geometry and resin meniscus profiles that maximize adhesive contact area between cell walls without adding excess mass. This microstructure ensures that shear loads are evenly distributed across the entire cell network, eliminating localized stress concentrations that lead to premature core failure.

2. Feature #2 – Low Smoke Toxicity (Preserving Life in Fire Events)

In a cabin fire, heat is survivable for minutes; smoke and toxic gases incapacitate in seconds. Hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride, and carbon monoxide are the primary killers. Our engineered core is formulated to minimize every one of these.

2.1 Chemistry of Low-Toxicity Combustion

Our core is built on a high-purity meta-aramid / para-aramid paper impregnated with a halogen-free phenolic resin. This chemistry is deliberately chosen because:

· No halogens – Zero chlorine or bromine compounds, which produce corrosive, highly toxic hydrogen halides (HCl, HBr) when heated.
· No heavy metal synergists – Common in cheap fire-retardants, these produce dense particulate smoke and toxic metal fumes.
· Controlled pyrolysis – The phenolic matrix chars (rather than melting or vaporizing), releasing primarily water vapor, carbon dioxide, and trace carbon monoxide—with none of the aromatic hydrocarbons or nitriles emitted by polyurethane or PVC foams.

The Regular Features Can Be Achieved:

1. Excellent resistance to high temperature, therefore the core can be used at a temperature more than 200 ℃ for the process of autoclave;

2. The density range is ranging widely from 29-160 kg/m3 to meet different capacity structure requirements;

3. It has extremely high shear strength, especially compared with foam core material, which is more suitable for use in light structure.

4. High toughness, high resistance to damage compared with other honeycomb core materials;
Fire retardant, low smoke, low toxicity (in line with the most stringent flame retardant and smoke standard of aviation);

5. Excellent creep and fatigue properties, can be used for the medium and long term.

6. High humidity strength, can be used in high humidity environment;

7. Easy to process, reduce production cost;

8. Corrosion resistant (not corroded by moisture or other medium that is in contact with it, nor can it electrochemically react with carbon fiber, like a metal honeycomb);
