Silicon Nitride-Bonded Silicon Carbide (Si₃N₄-Bonded SiC) thermocouple protection tubes are designed for industrial furnaces operating under frequent thermal cycling and rapid temperature changes.
Manufactured by nitriding metallic silicon within a silicon carbide matrix, the material combines the excellent thermal shock resistance of silicon carbide with the structural integrity provided by silicon nitride bonding. Compared with recrystallized SiC, Si₃N₄-bonded SiC offers superior resistance to repeated heating and cooling cycles, making it an economical choice for many medium- and high-temperature industrial applications.
With a maximum continuous service temperature of 1450°C, these tubes are widely used in heat treatment furnaces, ceramic kilns, non-ferrous metal processing, and batch-type industrial furnaces.
Si₃N₄-bonded SiC tubes are manufactured from high-purity silicon carbide aggregates blended with metallic silicon powder.
After extrusion forming, drying, and debinding, the green body is nitrided at 1400–1500°C in a high-purity nitrogen atmosphere. During sintering, the metallic silicon reacts with nitrogen to form silicon nitride (Si₃N₄), which bonds the SiC particles together without significant dimensional shrinkage.

They are especially suitable where furnaces experience frequent start-up and shutdown cycles.
