Woven gabion mesh, also known as double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh, is a key component for manufacturing gabion structures such as boxes, mattresses, and sacks. The mesh is produced by cold-forming steel wire into a hexagonal shape with a double-twisted selvedge along the edges, which prevents the mesh from unraveling even if the wire breaks at one point. Typically, the wire is coated with zinc (hot-dipped galvanized), Zn-Al alloy (Galfan), or PVC to resist corrosion in harsh environments. The double-twist weaving method distributes mechanical stress evenly, making the mesh highly durable under dynamic loads like flowing water or soil movement.
Common wire diameters range from 2.0 mm to 4.0 mm, and mesh openings (the distance between parallel wires) vary from 60×80 mm to 100×120 mm, depending on the project requirements. Woven gabion mesh is supplied either in flat panels for on-site folding or as prefabricated cages. Once assembled and filled with stones, the structures serve as flexible, permeable, and cost-effective solutions for retaining walls, river training, slope stabilization, and channel lining. The gaps between stones allow water to drain freely, eliminating hydrostatic pressure build-up behind the wall, while vegetation can grow through the voids over time, blending the structure into the natural environment.
