Ferro titanium is primarily produced through the aluminothermic reduction process, which is highly exothermic (produces its own heat).
Raw Materials: The main ingredients are titanium-bearing materials (like titanium scrap, or ilmenite sand), iron oxide (mill scale or iron ore), and aluminum powder as the reducing agent.
The Reaction: The materials are mixed and placed in a refractory-lined furnace. The reaction is initiated by an external heat source. The aluminum aggressively reduces the oxides of titanium and iron, generating immense heat that melts the resulting metals, which form the ferro titanium alloy.
Separation: The molten ferro titanium, being denser, sinks to the bottom of the furnace. The lighter alumina (Al₂O₃) slag floats on top. The two layers are then tapped separately and allowed to cool.
Processing: The solidified ferro titanium is crushed and sized for shipment to steel mills.
