Q: What components does a fan clutch assembly typically include during repair?
A: In the aftermarket, the fan clutch is usually supplied as an assembly. This assembly most commonly consists of the clutch body pre-assembled with the cooling fan blades. Sometimes it also includes necessary mounting shims and the lock nut. For some vehicle models, the pulley that drives the water pump may also be integrated into this assembly, allowing for one-stop replacement.

Q: Why is it recommended to check or replace the drive belt when replacing the fan clutch?
A: This is primarily for two reasons. Firstly, the old belt has worn and adapted to the specific profile and tension of the old clutch's operation. Installing a new clutch might alter the forces in the system, and the old belt may not seat perfectly on the new pulley, causing slippage or noise. Secondly, for labor efficiency, since the old belt must be removed anyway to access the clutch, replacing it with a new one preempts the need for another complex teardown should the old belt fail soon after.

Q: Can silicone oil in a fan clutch be used if it stratifies?
A: No—it can’t be used. Stratification means the oil has deteriorated (component separation), which causes torque transfer failure (fan not rotating or running constantly) and accelerated component wear. Drain the stratified oil immediately, clean the chamber, and refill with new dedicated silicone oil to prevent further failures. Degraded oil loses its ability to adjust fan speed effectively.
