Crawler machines rely on track systems (instead of wheels) for movement. The track shoe is the direct contact part between the machine and the ground:
The machine’s final drive rotates the sprockets, which engage with the track links (connected to track shoes).
As the sprockets drive the track chain, the track shoes “grip” the ground and convert the rotational force of the undercarriage into linear traction—pushing or pulling the machine forward, backward, or turning.
Without track shoes, the track links alone would slip on most surfaces (e.g., soil, gravel) and fail to transfer the machine’s power effectively.

2. Distribute Machine Weight to Protect Terrain & Prevent Sinking
Komatsu crawler equipment (e.g., large excavators) often weighs tens of tons. The track shoe plays a critical role in load distribution:
Its wide, flat (or specially patterned) surface spreads the machine’s total weight over a larger contact area with the ground.
This reduces ground pressure (force per unit area), preventing the machine from sinking into soft terrains like mud, sand, or loose soil—common on construction/mining sites.
It also minimizes damage to finished surfaces (e.g., paved roads, green spaces) when the machine moves between job areas.
