Manual Starters Overview
Manual starters are devices operated manually, designed for simple operation without requiring expert intervention. The starter includes a button or rotary knob that enables users to turn connected equipment on or off through mechanical linkages that open or close contacts.
Key Features of Manual Starters
- Safe and economical operation
- Compact size suitable for diverse appliions
- Overload protection for motor safety
- Available with various enclosure options
- Low initial cost compared to other starter types
Note: Manual starters don't break control circuits during power loss, which means motors may restart automatically when power is restored - an important safety consideration for certain appliions.
Starter Motor Operation
When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers charge from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, activating it and engaging the starter drive (Bendix gear system) with the vehicle's flywheel.
As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process. Once the engine is running properly, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
