Manual Starters Overview
Manual starters are simple, user-operated devices for controlling equipment. Featuring either a button or rotary knob, these starters use mechanical linkages to open or close contacts, starting or stopping the motor. Note that manual starters don't break control circuits during power loss, which may cause automatic restart when power returns - an important safety consideration for certain appliions.
Key Advantages of Manual Starters
- Safe and economical operation
- Compact design suitable for diverse appliions
- Built-in overload protection for motor safety
- Available with various enclosure options
- Low initial cost compared to other starter types
Starter Motor Operation
When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component channels power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, which activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system). The engaged starter motor turns the vehicle's flywheel, initiating the combustion process in petrol and diesel engines. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
