Manual Starters Overview
Manual starters are simple devices operated by hand, designed for straightforward operation without requiring expert intervention. These starters feature a button or rotary knob that controls the connected equipment through mechanical linkages that open or close contacts to start or stop the motor.
Key Features of Manual Starters
- Safe and economical operation
- Compact size suitable for diverse appliions
- Overload protection for motor safety
- Available with various enclosure options
- Low initial cost compared to other starter types
Note: Manual starters don't break the control circuit during power loss, which means connected motors may restart automatically when power returns. This behavior requires careful consideration in safety-critical appliions.
Starter Motor Operation
When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component transfers power from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor, which activates the starter drive (Bendix gear system) to engage the flywheel.
The starter motor cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
