Manual Starters Overview
Manual starters are devices that are operated manually. These starters are straightforward to operate and do not require expert intervention. The starter includes a button (or rotary knob) that enables a user to turn the connected equipment on or off.
Key Features of Manual Starters
- Delivers safe and economical operation
- Compact size suitable for wide range of applications
- Provides overload protection to the motor
- Available with various enclosure options
- Low initial cost compared to other starter types
Note: Manual starters do not break a control circuit during power loss, which means the motor could restart automatically when power is restored. This is an important safety consideration in certain applications.
How Starter Motors Work
When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component sends charge from the vehicle's battery to the starter motor.
The electrical current activates the starter motor and the starter drive (Bendix gear system), which engages the vehicle's flywheel. As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process.
Once the engine is running, the connection between starter motor and flywheel disengages automatically, as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
