Tailored for IPX7-rated speaker enclosures such as portable Bluetooth speakers, outdoor PA systems, and marine audio, this custom PFAS-free waterproof sound permeable membrane delivers powerful audio output while keeping water out. It is available in larger sheet sizes or pre-cut formats to fit speaker grille openings. The non-fluorinated film ensures that your audio product can achieve high waterproof ratings without relying on restricted PFAS chemicals, future-proofing your design for global markets.

Speaker drivers need to move air to produce sound; a completely sealed enclosure without a venting membrane would dampen the speaker cone and distort audio. Traditionally, a PTFE membrane was placed behind the grille. Now, manufacturers want to eliminate PFAS from the bill of materials. However, a membrane for a powerful speaker must handle high sound pressure levels without flapping or tearing, and must not introduce audible distortion even at maximum volume.

We provide a PFAS-free sound permeable membrane engineered with a more open pore structure and reinforced by a thin polyester mesh backing for durability. It allows high air displacement with minimal acoustic resistance. The membrane is hydrophobic up to 1 meter of submersion and blocks sand and dust. Custom shapes can include a perimeter adhesive gasket for direct adhesion to speaker grille frames. Installation can be done manually or with pick-and-place automation.

Used in rugged Bluetooth speakers, shower speakers, marine cockpit speakers, outdoor public announcement horns, and communication headsets. It can also serve as a dust cap replacement in waterproof earphones.

The membrane is attached behind the speaker grille. When the speaker cone moves, air flows back and forth through the membrane pores with very low resistance. The polyester mesh provides stiffness to prevent ballooning under high SPL. Water from immersion is stopped at the hydrophobic surface, while the speaker maintains full acoustic output. The design ensures that the resonant frequency of the membrane lies outside the speaker’s operating band.

Provide the speaker’s outer frame dimensions and grille opening geometry. We will design a custom membrane patch that matches the acoustic port area. If your speaker has high excursion, we recommend the reinforced mesh variant. For saltwater exposure, choose our corrosion-resistant adhesive. We can supply prototypes with and without adhesive for AB audio testing.
