Installation & Environmental Guidelines
Does the IP20 chassis rating limit our placement within the plant?
Yes. The IP20 rating defines the CM3201 S2 as an "open-type" module. It is intended for installation within a secondary NEMA 4 or IP54/65 enclosure. This rating provides protection against solid contact (finger-safe) but zero resistance to liquid ingress or conductive dust. For wash-down areas or outdoor racks, the external cabinet must provide the primary environmental seal.
Can we utilize the storage temperature range for long-term "Cold-Sparing"?
The -40°C to 85°C storage range is excellent for inventory ruggedness. However, "Cold-Sparing" (keeping the module unpowered in a cold rack) requires a ramp-up period. If the warehouse hits the -40°C floor, the module must reach the -20°C operational minimum before 24 VDC is applied to the backplane to prevent thermal shock to the logic gates.
How does the 10% to 95% humidity spec affect reliability in coastal facilities?
The critical factor here is "non-condensing." While the module tolerates 95% RH, saline or humid air that reaches the dew point inside the cabinet will cause trace-level shorts on the PCB. In coastal or tropical SIS (Safety Instrumented System) applications, we mandate the use of enclosure heaters or desiccants to keep the RH within a safe "non-condensing" window.
