EDM Small Hole Drilling Machine
The EDM small-hole drilling machine (also known as an EDM driller or "Super Drill") is a specialized piece of electrical discharge machining equipment. It employs a slender, hollow brass or copper electrode tube to generate pulsed spark discharges between the electrode and the workpiece; the high-temperature sparks erode the material, enabling the high-speed machining of tiny holes in conductive metals regardless of material hardness.
This technology is widely used in industries such as mold making, aerospace, precision machinery, and tool manufacturing.
Working Principle
Instead of mechanical cutting, the machine utilizes high-temperature sparks generated by electrical pulses to melt and vaporize the metal. The hollow tubular electrode rotates while continuously advancing, and a high-pressure working fluid flows through the electrode's central bore; this fluid flushes away erosion byproducts, cools the machining zone, and maintains a stable spark gap.
Continuous spark erosion gradually penetrates the workpiece, creating a precision small hole. Since the material's hardness does not limit machining capability, materials such as hardened steel, alloy steel, tungsten steel, and titanium alloys can be processed efficiently.
