Adenophora stricta Miq. is a perennial herb of the genus Adenophora in the Campanulaceae family.
Its roots are carrot-like, unbranched, and can grow up to 1 meter tall. The plant is upright and
unbranched, with pseudoraceme or panicles, narrow, short pedicels, and entire or serrated calyxes.
The corolla is often purple or blue, the pedicel is short, the lower part of the filaments expands
into a sheet-like shape, and the anthers are slender. The ovary is inferior and there are numerous
ovules. The seeds are oval-shaped. It blooms in July and August.
Medicinal Properties & Processing
Use roots as medicine. It is harvested in autumn. The above-ground parts and fibrous roots are
removed, the coarse bark is scraped off, and it is dried in the sun immediately. It is non-toxic,
sweet and slightly bitter. It has the functions of nourishing, dispelling cold and heat, clearing
the lungs and relieving cough, as well as treating the heart and spleen.
