Where the Tooling Conversation Actually Starts

Most tooling conversations begin with a catalog number. PCD conversations begin with a problem that standard tooling cannot solve.

"My inserts don't last a full shift in aluminum."

That is an edge material problem, not a setup problem. Polycrystalline diamond has zero chemical affinity for aluminum—no cold welding, no built-up edge, no galling. The chip slides across the cutting face rather than sticking to it. In silicon-heavy casting alloys like A390 and A356, where hard silicon particles act as abrasives against conventional carbide, PCD is simply harder than the abrasive itself. The insert does not know it is supposed to be wearing out.

"The CFRP panels delaminate when I drill them."

Delamination is not a cutting problem—it is a dullness problem. As the cutting edge rounds over, it pushes fibers instead of severing them. PCD resists that rounding. The sharp edge lasts through the production run, cutting carbon and glass fibers cleanly rather than displacing them into the laminate structure. Hole exit quality—the classic failure point in composite drilling—remains intact.

"Bore position shifts over the course of a production batch."

Tool wear changes every cutting parameter. More feed force required. Slightly more deflection. A subtle shift in true position. The operator compensates, but the first ten parts and the last ten parts do not truly match. PCD arrests this degradation cycle. The cutting geometry that drills or bores the morning's first hole is still producing the afternoon's last hole within the same dimensional envelope.

"My part does not exist in any tool catalog."

This is not a limitation—it is a standard request. Custom PCD tooling is built around the application, not the other way around. Unusual diameters. Extended tool reaches. Non-standard nose radii. Specific rake and clearance angles for unusual workpiece materials. The tool gets designed once the part requirements are defined.
