Squalene is an organic compound with a wide range of sources. It is composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms and belongs to the same family and cholesterol. Squalene is a colorless oily liquid and is a natural lipid found in both plants and animals. In humans, it is a component of sebum, a lipid produced by skin cells. Squalene is an important lipid in the skin that constitutes about 13% of human sebum, making it an essential component for skin homogenization and NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor). Chemically, it is an unsaturated (containing a double bond) hydrocarbon (consisting only of carbon and hydrogen) molecule that can undergo oxidation. On the positive side, this means that squalene can act as an antioxidant. Squalene is a key component of the skin's natural moisturizing barrier, helping to keep the skin moist and soft. Our bodies naturally produce squalene, which is an important moisturizing factor in the skin. Unfortunately, as we age, the amount of squalene produced in our bodies decreases sharply. This leads to dry skin, wrinkles, and a reduction in volume. The production of this natural moisturizer peaks during adolescence and slows down in the 20s or 30s. As we age, the skin becomes dry and rough.
