Key Element Functions
High Chromium + Nickel: Stabilizes the austenitic structure and provides excellent general corrosion and oxidation resistance.
High Molybdenum (3-4%): Significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments and enhances resistance to certain acids.
Low Carbon Content: Maximum 0.03% carbon reduces carbide precipitation during welding, minimizing sensitization and intergranular corrosion.
Controlled Impurities: Low phosphorus and sulfur content maintains toughness, weldability, and corrosion resistance.
Design & Specification Note: Always refer to official standards or mill certificates for exact composition ranges, such as ASTM A240/A276 or EN/ISO equivalents. The essential chemical identity of 317L stainless steel is approximately 19% Cr, 13% Ni, 3-4% Mo, with very low carbon content.
