Type 316 Austenitic Stainless Steel Sheets Overview
316/316L Stainless Steel Sheet is a premium grade stainless steel where superior corrosion resistance is essential. This material is widely used in marine environments, highly acidic conditions, underwater equipment, surgical tools, and food/pharmaceutical applications. The addition of molybdenum enhances corrosion resistance compared to the more economical 304 grade.

Technical Characteristics
Corrosion Resistance
Types 316 and 316L stainless steels provide enhanced chloride corrosion resistance compared to Type 304 due to molybdenum content. Suitable for marine atmospheres where pitting corrosion is a concern. Excellent resistance to chemicals in paper, petroleum, food, and dairy industries. Effective in sulfuric acid environments below 5% concentration up to 150°F (60°C).
Heat Treatment
Annealing: Heat to 1900-2100°F (1038-1149°C), then rapidly quench.
Formability and Weldability
Excellent ductility in annealed condition for roll forming, deep drawing, and bending. Weldable using common fusion and resistance techniques with proper procedures to avoid hot cracking. Type 316L eliminates harmful carbide precipitation during welding.
