Grade 321 / 321H Stainless Steel Overview
321 stainless steel is a titanium stabilized grade designed for service in the 1000-1600°F temperature range. For optimal resistance to intergranular corrosion and polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking, a stabilizing treatment at 1550-1650°F with air cooling is recommended.
This grade is readily weldable by all common methods including submerged arc, with appropriate weld fillers being AWS ER347 bare wire and E347 covered electrodes. It has a machinability rating of 45% relative to AISI B1112.
Available forms include: Sheet, plate, coil, strip, wire, pipe, tube, bar, profile, round, flat, square, and hexagonal.

Possible Alternative Grades
| Grade | Why it might be chosen instead of 321 |
| 304L | The requirement is for resistance to intergranular corrosion, not for high-temperature strength |
| 3CR12 | Only a mild "high temperature" environment is present… up to about 600°C |
| 304H | Only a mild "high temperature" environment is present… up to about 800°C |
| 310 | The temperature of the operating environment is up to about 1100°C - too high for 321 or 321H |
| S30815 (253MA) | The temperature of the operating environment is up to about 1150°C - too high for 321 or 321H |
