About 304/304L Stainless Steel
AISI 304 stainless steel (UNS S30400) is the most widely used stainless steel, containing 18-20% Cr and 8-10.5% Ni, also known as 18-8 stainless steel. SS 304 is non-magnetic under annealing conditions but may become weakly magnetic after cold working processes. Type 304 offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion and oxidation, making it the standard food grade stainless steel widely used in the food industry.
Variants include ultra-low-carbon 304L, nitrogen-containing 304N, improved creep performance 304H, and higher carbon content type 302. Compared to AISI 304, 316 grade stainless steel features reduced chromium content, increased nickel content, and added 2-3% molybdenum for enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in marine applications.
