Material Performance
Corrosion Resistance
Grade 301 stainless steel offers corrosion resistance similar to 304 grade, providing good performance
in mildly corrosive environments at ambient temperatures.
Heat Resistance
Excellent oxidation resistance for intermittent service up to 840°C and continuous service up to 900°C.
Heat Treatment
Solution treatment annealing at 1010°C to 1120°C followed by rapid cooling. Intermediate annealing uses
lower temperature ranges. Thermal hardening is not suitable for this grade.
Cold Working
Grade 301 and its low carbon variants are primarily used as high strength stainless steel with very high
work hardening rates (approximately 14MPa increase per 1% reduction in area). This enables high strength
achievement through cold rolling and roll forming operations.
Welding
Suitable for all standard welding methods using 308L filler metal. Welded parts require annealing for
maximum corrosion resistance. Spot welding is effective for assembling cold rolled 301 components without
compromising overall strength.
Applications
- Rail car structural components
- Air frame sections
- Highway trailer components
- Automotive wheel covers
- Wiper blade clips and holders
- Stove element clips
- Screen frames
- Toaster springs
- Curtain walls
