The end plate is a critical structural component located at the two ends of a battery module. Its primary role is to provide mechanical integrity and ensure the safe, reliable operation of the battery pack under various conditions.

The main functions can be broken down as follows:

1. Structural Support and Integrity

  • Constriction and Stacking: The end plates act as "bookends" that clamp the entire stack of individual battery cells together. They are typically held under high pressure by long tension rods or straps that run the length of the module.

  • Prevention of Cell Bulging: Lithium-ion cells can swell slightly during charging and discharging, and more significantly over their lifetime. The rigid end plates counteract this swelling force, maintaining the cells in a tightly packed configuration. This prevents internal movement, misalignment, and potential damage to cell tabs.

2. Mechanical Protection and Containment

  • Impact Resistance: The end plates serve as the first line of defense against external impacts or crushing forces, protecting the more fragile battery cells inside.

  • Containment: In the event of a catastrophic cell failure (thermal runaway), the end plate helps to contain the effects within the module for as long as possible, preventing or delaying propagation to adjacent cells and modules.
